Tony Blair has said it is possible to identify problem children who could grow up to be a potential “menace to society” even before they are born.
Setting out plans for state intervention to prevent babies born into high-risk families becoming problem teenagers of the future, the prime minister said teenage mothers could be forced to accept state help before giving birth, as part of a clampdown on antisocial behaviour.
Mr Blair defended the need for state intervention and said action could even be taken “pre-birth” if necessary as families with drug and alcohol problems were being identified too late. More>>

A Clockwork Orange scenario… but I have to say after watching the movie… I might actually support the idea!

anonymous - you are sure you watched Clockwork Orange to the end? Blair staggers from one monstrous idea to the next. And they are made worse by the fact that it is all meant to ‘help.’

What is it with this guy??? Is this an attempt at a Clintonesqe move to the center gone horribly of the track like the support for the invasion of Iraq?

Good old Malthusian population control under the well-worn guise of concern. Particularly breath-taking is that these measures will see light of day in some form, sooner rather than later.

this man is not serious…next thing you know new born babies will have barcodes stamped on their foreheads

Actually RFID tags work better than barcodes… We might be able to keep track of the terrorists!

BTW - there are RFID tags that you can use instead of remembering all those passwords!

mmk - I watched ACO till the end. Alex is “un”cured & goes to work for the politicians - back to being violent!

Note that the book & movie versions have different endings.

coldtusker - I think I need to watch Clockwork Orange again. It traumatised me so badly when I saw it that I think I promptly forgot everything except the scenes of violence. Did not read the book.
What really pulls my goat is that the social engineering of the Blairs is ultimately likely to end up in places like Kenya where the flow of their monies and ideas is unimpeded by critical voices. Don’t you think that there is something very Clockwork Orange in Blair’s view of his society?

It depends… If your a droog then u DON’T support Blair!

But if you are the writer whose wife was raped & killed or the folks who got bashed upby Alex & his droogs… well, yes, you support Blair!

Me? I’d rather have a society that is forced to be genteel than face a Nairoberry situation!–>
